Shit Sandwich

I had a very challenging time during the worst of the Covid Pandemic. My professional life as an actor and commercial photographer ceased to exist. I was depressed. I felt isolated. I began to feel the need to express myself in a new way. This led to my first ever fine art series, Shit Sandwich. It’s a darkly comic, absurdist, and sometimes somber take on the various pandemic experiences of some friends of mine. It explores themes of addiction, isolation, hopelessness, hope, loss of livelihood, and displacement that most people have had to deal with in some fashion during this difficult time. These staged shots utilize the metaphor of a “shit sandwich,” which symbolizes the difficult hand everyone was dealt and forced to cope with over the course of multiple years. Each session began with a dialogue with my friends about their own pandemic experience. This unearthed information helped dictate how each subject was shot-honoring an experience in a stylized way.
